Hola everyone!
Well, not having wifi kind of took a toll on starting a blog, but here it is now. (Ps I am at a library using the wifi that I walked 2 miles to from my house.)
I left Boise at 3pm and finally reached where I live at 8:30 am on Thursday. The trip was fine. Really long and tiring, but nothing crazy happened and I made it to the bus station exactly as my host mom made it there. We went home, I met the kids, they went to school, I showered and fell asleep for the next 7 hours....
That night I played with the kids and ate dinner with them. Then went to bed and slept the entire night. 10:30pm-8:00am.
The family is awesome. The dad Manuel, works as a lawyer, he told me that he is fed up with it and he does not like it but he has nothing else. That broke my heart. I never want to feel that way about my career!
The mom Mónica, works in marketing for a company that sells beer and water that started here in A Coruña. She is so awesome. So nice and such a great mom. They are both really great parents.
Nico is 8 he understands the most English and can usually translate for the rest of the kids.
Lucas is 6 and is crazy but very sweet and tries hard to talk to me.
Matias is 4 and is SO CUTE. His sweet little Spanish voice kills me everytime!
Then there is Sora, she is their house keeper that lives with us too. She is nice but kind of scares me. She is from PuertoRico so her Spanish is a little harder for me to understand. She does not say her s when she talks so she says "Gracia" instead of "gracias" and stuff like that. Shout out to my linguistics professor at BSU for teaching me to be able to differentiate in Spanish like that. I am apparently learning something with my Spanish degree for anyone who doubted me!
Then there is me. The blonde girl that lives with them. I wear rainboots everywhere because I just know at somepoint in the day it will rain. And it almost always does. But no one else here is blonde or has rainboots. Moni told me that it was because the winters here are very bad and rainy and cold so now that it is spring everyone is celebrating with their spring attire. Oh well, I stick out like usual I guess.
I have my own room. It is nice. I sleep on a futon and while it would not have been my first choice in retrospect it is much better than my baby sized bed in SanSe last spring. I sleep a lot. Like everyday I have taken a nap. Sometimes I accidentally sleep for four hours....
Anyways....the first weekend they took me to a festival that they themselves had not even been to yet. Manuel told me it was excited for them so I was going to "flip out" It is called the "Festival de cans" and it is a film and music festival. If any of you know the "Cannes" film festival in France this is like the way smaller, less important, lesser known joke festival. It did have some famous people from Spain there who I met. I had no idea who they were but that is okay, it was still cool. I actually road on a cart with one of them and ended up in a newspaper here. So I guess you could say I am sort of famous now too...:)
That night we slept at their beach house. Which is AMAZING. It is huge. My entire family could fit pretty comfortably. It is walking distance to a beautiful port and a few beaches. On Sunday we spent all day outside. We went to the beach in the morning and then to lunch in the afternoon and ate outside while the kiddos played on the rocks. We met some of their friends there and stayed there for a really long time talking and enjoying the sun. It was not the warmest but still enjoyable. I have a sunglass tanline as well as a sandal tan line so I was content.
On Monday I met Carla, the woman who set this whole au pair thing up for me. She is so super nice! I really enjoyed talking to her. She gave me tips and talked to me about places to visit and helped me with the map of the city and the bus schedule. After our meeting I walked around and visited lots of shops and got some food. It was an enjoyable day! It is amazing to me how comfortable I feel in a big city I have never been to. I was never scared and I made it home on the bus just fine. I am going to go back tomorrow I think!
My house is about 20 minutes outside of the city of A Coruña. So to get there I have to be driven or take the bus. Which is no big deal. It is kind of a hassle on the bus but it is worth it because the city is awesome. It is surrounded by the ocean so either side you go on has either a beach or a port for ships and sailboats. There is so much to see!
Right now my only job is to take the kids to the bus at 9:15 and pick them up at 6:00 and play with them and speak English to them. They still are in school so in June and July the times will change a little bit but still that will be my main job. Seriously the easiest nanny job I have ever had. So much free time! She also bought me a Spanish phone so I could talk to her so that has been nice.
Today marks one week since I left America! I am not counting down, but 78 days until I am back in Boise! The boys ask me when I leave a lot because Lucas wants my Spanish phone...haha!
I am happy and super surprised to say I have not cried yet. There have been a few moments when I have come close but I have not actually cried yet...is this what growing up is?
I think the family is trying to get wifi but until then, and if that never happens I will continue to try and update my blog in libraries and cafes.
I love and miss you all!
xoxo
